For four centuries in the American Southwest, families have owned their private land while collectively managing the water that sustains it. The mayordomo coordinates the flow. The parciantes, the members, contribute labor to maintain the ditch. No corporation owns the water. No state agency controls it. Private property flourishes because the commons is collectively governed. It is a third path: collective governance by owners.* --- ## The Urgency Agentic AI is being born right now. Software that operates on your behalf, makes decisions, coordinates with other agents, runs continuously. To be useful, these agents will need access to your most intimate data: Your photos, including the ones you'd never post. Cameras outside your home watching who comes and goes. Cameras inside your home watching how you live. Cameras in your vehicle watching where you drive and who rides with you. Microphones on the smart speakers in your kitchen, your bedroom, your child's room. Microphones in your car listening to every conversation. Your location, 24/7, for years. Neural networks recognizing the faces of your family, your friends, your pets. Actuators controlling your doors, your locks, your car. The patterns of your life laid bare to algorithms that never forget. This is not hypothetical. The sensors are already in your home. The question is who governs the agents that process what they see and hear. Here's what the platforms want: your agents live in their cloud. Your cameras feed their servers. Your microphones stream to their data centers. Your location history, your face, your voice, your patterns, all enclosed in their domains. Mined. Monetized. Gone. Once your data is in their walled gardens, it never comes back. It trains their models. It improves their products. It becomes their asset. You get a service. They get ownership of your life. **The architecture determines the outcome.** If agents run in the cloud, data flows up. Centralization. Enclosure. The technofeudal lords own your intimate life and rent you access to intelligence derived from it. Or the state accesses what the platforms collect (your home, your movements, your relationships, your patterns) without warrant or constraint. If agents run on the edge, on your devices, on your infrastructure, serving from your domain, then data stays where it is. Intelligence comes to your data. Your data never leaves your land. You remain the owner. Your intimate data is a resource to be governed. The question is: governed by whom? By agents that work on your behalf? Or by agents that work for the capitalists who want to monetize you, and the state that wants to monitor you? This is the fork in the road. Right now. While the agentic economy is being born, we decide: do we federate intelligence to the edge where our data lives? Or do we surrender our data to centralized domains where their intelligence lives? The window is short. Once the agentic architecture calcifies around cloud-hosted agents, the data will have flowed. The enclosure will be complete. The rent will be permanent. --- ## The Lie You Were Told You were given two choices: capitalism or socialism. Rule by capital or rule by state. Silicon Valley or a Stalinist Russia. This is a false binary. And it was fed to you by people who benefit from your confusion. The first trick: they told you capitalism means free markets. It doesn't. ### The Three Factors Classical economics identifies three factors of production: **land**, **labor**, and **capital**. **Land** is the earth and its resources: soil, water, minerals, the place where production happens. Land carries responsibility. It must be stewarded or it degrades. **Labor** is human effort and skill: your hands, your mind, your time, your care. Labor is what you contribute. It's how you create value. **Capital** is the produced means of production: tools, machines, infrastructure that amplify labor's power. A plow. A loom. A factory. A server. In an agrarian economy, these three were bound together. The farmer owned his land, contributed his labor, and owned his capital: his tools, his barn, his team of oxen. The person who worked was the person who owned. Industrialization broke that unity. The factory, the machinery, the rail lines; these required accumulation beyond any individual's capacity. So the factors separated. Workers brought labor. Landlords brought land. And a new class brought capital. Each claimed a share of production: wages for labor, rent for land, profit for capital. But notice the difference. Labor requires ongoing contribution; you must keep working. Land requires ongoing stewardship; you must tend it or lose it. Capital just sits there and collects. ### The Capitalist vs. The Entrepreneur Americans love the entrepreneur. And they should. The entrepreneur sees a problem and solves it. She risks her time, her savings, her reputation. She builds something that didn't exist before. She creates value where there was none. She employs her neighbors. She serves her customers. When she succeeds, she's earned it: through work, through skill, through creation. The capitalist is something else. The capitalist owns capital and commands a share of production by virtue of that ownership alone. He buys shares in the company. He funds someone else to solve the problem. He risks money, and only money he can afford to lose. Your grandfather built something. He woke before dawn, solved problems no one else would touch, created value through his own hands and mind. He was an entrepreneur. Now his company belongs to a private equity firm that never met him, never understood his craft, never served his customers. They are capitalists. They extract from what he built. ### A Word That Didn't Exist The term "capitalism" was coined in 1850 by Louis Blanc, seventy-four years after the Declaration of Independence. His definition: "the appropriation of capital by some to the exclusion of others." Adam Smith never used the word. He wrote of "commercial society," free exchange between producers. He championed markets precisely to *oppose* the mercantilists and monopolists of his day, the people who used state power to concentrate ownership and extract rents. Karl Marx analyzed capital exhaustively. He used "capitalist" over 2,600 times in *Das Kapital*. But even Marx rarely used "capitalism" as a noun for the whole system. In 1871, four years after publishing *Das Kapital*, an American interviewer from the New York Herald had to explain the term to him: "capitalism, that is, as you would say, monopoly." The father of anti-capitalist critique didn't use the word. As late as the 1920s, American economists rejected "capitalism" as a socialist expression. Herbert Hoover was the first American president to say the word in public, once, reluctantly, to defend what he preferred to call "the American system." **The founding fathers could not have believed in capitalism. The word didn't exist.** Jefferson championed the yeoman farmer, people who owned their land, their tools, and their labor together. He was deeply suspicious of banks, speculators, and financiers who made money from money. Franklin embodied the entrepreneur: printer, inventor, civic builder. The founders were classical republicans who believed property should be broadly distributed so citizens could be economically independent and therefore politically free. They would have recognized the concentration of ownership in a few hands, whether by capitalists or by the state, as a threat to the republic. --- ## The Third Path Capital is often required. The barn the farmer can't build alone. The irrigation ditch that serves the whole valley. The factory, the railroad, the server infrastructure. Some things require accumulation beyond any individual's capacity. The question is who controls it and for whom. Marx saw the danger clearly: when capital concentrates in a separate class, that class extracts from everyone else. He was right about the diagnosis. His prescription failed. Seize the state, let the state own capital, wait for the state to dissolve. It never dissolved. The commissars became the new capitalist class, with guns. State ownership replaced one extractive class with another. There is a third way. Capital can be collectively governed by those who depend on it, without the state. Since the 1600s, acequias have governed water in what is now New Mexico and Colorado. They predate the United States. They predate capitalism and socialism as ideologies. They still function. **Private landowners. Shared infrastructure.** Each family owns their parcela, their land. They hold title. They decide what to grow, how to cultivate, whether to sell. Private property, fully. The water that makes the land productive flows through the acequia, the irrigation ditch that no single owner could build or maintain alone. The acequia is the commons: the infrastructure that serves the land. **Owners govern the commons together.** The parciantes, the landowners who depend on the water, govern the acequia collectively. One family, one vote. They elect the mayordomo who coordinates the flow. They set the rules for allocation. They show up for the annual cleaning. They maintain what they depend on. No corporation owns the water. No state agency controls it. The people whose property depends on the flow govern the flow together. **Private property and commons aren't opposites.** One enables the other. You own your land. You govern the shared infrastructure that makes your land productive. Your ownership is more secure because you're not dependent on a landlord for access to water. The commons is well-maintained because the owners who use it govern it. Elinor Ostrom won the Nobel Prize documenting systems like this: commons governed by the people who depend on them, outperforming both state control and privatization. She found acequias in her research. --- ## The Digital Enclosure The internet was designed for owners. Anyone could run a server. Anyone could host a website. Anyone could own their namespace, their data, their digital presence. The architecture was peer-to-peer, your computer talking directly to other computers. You were meant to be a proprietor. Look at what you don't own: You don't own your email. Google hosts it, reads it, mines it. You don't own your social graph. Meta does. You don't own your files. Amazon, Microsoft, Apple hold them, accessible at their discretion. You don't control your identity; platforms own your account and can delete you without recourse. You don't host your domain; their servers do, so your presence exists at their pleasure. **You have no property rights in the digital realm.** You have tenancy. Revocable, surveillable, extractable tenancy on land owned by platform lords. The cloud is someone else's computer. The platform is someone else's land. You're the sharecropper producing value that flows upward to people who hold the deed. --- ## The Common Pool Resource of Our Time Water made agriculture possible in the high desert. Scarce, flowing, essential. The acequias governed it through communities of landowners managing the shared flow. The common pool resources of the digital age: - **Compute**: processing power to run your agents - **Storage**: memory for your data to persist - **Bandwidth**: capacity for your agents to communicate - **Power**: electricity to keep your infrastructure running - **Availability**: always-on presence when your devices sleep - **Accessibility**: public IPs that make your parcela reachable from the internet These are finite. They flow. They must be allocated. No single parcela has all six in abundance. Federated together (your always-on Raspberry Pi, my public IP, her surplus storage, his solar-powered node) the acequia provides what no individual can. Right now, four companies control these resources. They're building the data centers, securing the power contracts, buying the chips. They want your agents to run on their infrastructure, which means your data flows to their land. But you have infrastructure too. Your phone. Your laptop. Your home network. Compute, storage, bandwidth, power, sitting in your possession, on your property. What you lack (always-on availability, public IPs) your neighbors might have. What they lack, you might have. You contribute what you have. You draw what you need. The mayordomo coordinates the flow. The parciantes govern the rules. Private property, collectively irrigated. --- ## The Architecture **Your parcela:** Your devices (phone, laptop, home server) running your agents, storing your data, serving your presence. Your domain hosted from your infrastructure. Your property. Sovereign territory in the digital realm. Your browser is a server. Service workers let it serve content. WebRTC lets it talk directly to other browsers, peer to peer. Your phone can serve your files, run your agents, host your presence. Your identity is yours. Cryptographic keys you hold. Self-sovereign identity that doesn't depend on any company's continued approval. You prove who you are without asking permission. **The acequia:** Shared infrastructure connecting parcelas. Protocols for discovery, coordination, mutual backup. Nodes with public IPs serving as gates. Always-on servers providing availability for intermittent devices. Compute, storage, bandwidth flowing where needed. Not owned by a platform. Governed by the owners who depend on it. **Federated learning:** The network gets smarter without centralizing data. Your agent learns from your patterns. Your neighbor's agent learns from theirs. The models share what they've learned (gradients, weights, insights) without sharing the underlying data. Intelligence emerges from the commons while privacy remains architectural. No one surrenders their raw data to a central collector. The acequia learns collectively while each parcela keeps its own. **The mayordomo:** The word means "manager of the household," a steward elected by the community. Coordination nodes that route traffic, maintain directories, resolve disputes. They serve at the pleasure of the parciantes and can be replaced. **The parciantes:** You. And your neighbors. And anyone who contributes to the commons and governs it together. Private property federated into shared capability. Owners, not tenants. --- ## The Paradigm Shift ![Donella Meadows' Leverage Points](./images/leverage-points.png) Donella Meadows identified twelve leverage points for intervening in a system, places where a small push can produce large change. Most efforts focus on the shallow end: adjusting parameters, tweaking incentives, adding regulations. These barely move the needle. The deeper you go, the more leverage you have. The penultimate lever is the paradigm out of which the system arises. The current paradigm: computation lives in the cloud. Your data flows to their servers. Their algorithms process your life. You are a client, requesting services from infrastructure you will never own. You cannot fix this by tweaking parameters. Better privacy policies won't help; the architecture still extracts. Antitrust enforcement won't help; break up one platform, another consolidates. Regulation won't help; the platforms capture their regulators. The paradigm itself produces these outcomes. As long as computation lives on their land, you are a tenant. **The lever we're pulling is paradigm change.** Computation moves to the edge. Data stays where it's generated. Intelligence comes to you. Your devices serve; they don't just consume. You own your infrastructure. You federate with neighbors. You govern the commons together. A different answer to the question: where does computation live? **But the deepest lever is more powerful still: the power to shift paradigms as new challenges arise.** If the platforms own AI, they choose the paradigms. They decide how intelligence is structured, what problems it solves, whose interests it serves. You adapt to their models or you're left behind. You have no power to reshape the system when the world changes. If citizens own AI, running on their infrastructure, trained on their priorities, governed by their communities, they hold the ultimate lever. When new challenges emerge, they can develop new paradigms. When old models fail, they can create new ones. The means of production for intelligence itself belongs to the people who need it. What's at stake is who has the power to create the paradigms of tomorrow. Citizens with AI working on their behalf can continuously adapt, evolve, and respond to challenges we can't yet imagine. Platforms will optimize for extraction. The state will optimize for control. Citizens, federated and empowered, will optimize for flourishing. The scaling follows Reed's Law, where value explodes through group-forming networks of autonomous communities. Every acequia that forms multiplies the possibilities for every other. A pattern to replicate. --- ## The Revolution Is a Choice In traditional economics, challenging capitalist control required revolution: seizing factories, occupying land, confronting state power. The risks were enormous and the outcomes were often worse than what they replaced. The digital realm is different. The means of production are already in your hands. Your phone. Your laptop. Your home network. These devices have more compute power than the servers of the early internet. You already own them. The revolution is a choice. A choice to host yourself. To serve from your own domain. To hold your own identity. To keep your data on your own land. The revolution is a URL, and where you host it. Your domain is your land in the digital realm. If someone else hosts it, you're still a tenant. Their servers, their rules, their kill switch. Host it yourself. Serve it from your devices. Let your browser be a server. Let your laptop be your land. The domain becomes truly yours when you control where it resolves, when the bits flow from infrastructure you own, federated with neighbors you trust, governed by communities you belong to. --- ## The Call The platforms won't give you this. They profit from your tenancy. The state won't give you this. Legible citizens on centralized platforms are easier to control. Ownership is something you claim. By running your own infrastructure. By federating with other owners. By governing the commons together. Become a parciante. Contribute to the digital ditch that sustains your community. Form your acequia around your watershed, your fireshed, your neighborhood, your craft, your cause. Build infrastructure you govern together. Let AI serve your commons. The water is flowing.
